Poland’s LGBTQ+ community celebrates Pride with peaceful marches in Katowice and Lublin

Poland’s LGBTQ+ community celebrated Pride with peaceful marches after years of opposition. On 3 September, nearly 4000 people hit the streets of Katowice for the city’s annual LGBTQ+ Pride and equality march. According to Notes from Poland, the annual event was a collaborative venture with the Ukrainian city of Odesa to show solidarity with its queer community. While there were no violent interruptions from anti-LGBTQ+ individuals, it was met with opposition from the conservative group Fundacja Pro. Before the march, Katowice’s mayor attempted to ban the organisation from attending, but…

Polish court orders four towns to scrap ‘LGBT-free’ zones

Four municipalities have been ordered to scrap their so-called ‘LGBT-free’ zones by a top Polish appeals court. A legal challenge from the country’s Human Rights Ombudsman resulted in a ruling that nine must come to an end, though this was then appealed by Ordo luris, a right-wing think-tank, the public prosecutor’s office and the municipalities in question. However, on 28 June, the first four of these appeals were dismissed by the Supreme Administrative Court, meaning the towns of Istebna, Klwów, Osiek and Serniki will now have to abandon their ‘LGBT-free’…

LGBTQ+ Ukrainians to hold march for their country’s “peace and freedom” in Poland

KyivPride and Warsaw Pride will march together in Poland for the “peace and freedom” of Ukraine following Russia’s invasion of the country earlier this year. For months, Western officials reported that Russia was planning an invasion of Ukraine that could begin at any moment – something Vladimir Putin adamantly denied. In the early hours of 24 February, however, Ukrainian officials stated that Russia had launched an all-out assault on the country, with troops crossing the border. Since then, the world has seen the fastest and largest displacement of people in…

Polish govt introduces ‘de-facto ban’ on LGBTQ+ teaching in schools

Poland’s parliament has approved a law that will essentially ban teaching LGBTQ-inclusive topics in schools. On the afternoon of 13 January, the educational reform was adopted into law after being debated in the Sejm (the lower house of Poland’s parliament) a day earlier. Named ‘Lex Czarnek’ or ‘Czarnek’s Law’ after minister of education Przemysław Czarnek, its contents bring the country in line with Hungary and Russia who previously adopted similar anti-propaganda legislation. It gives superintendents the power to overrule any teaching materials that are given to schools by outside groups,…

Poland’s LGBTQ+ community potentially at risk after court challenges primacy of EU laws

Poland’s LGBTQ+ community are potentially at risk after a high court challenged the primacy of EU laws. On Thursday, the country’s constitutional tribunal ruled that the EU and some of its key treaty articles go against Poland’s own constitution. Back in March, the country’s prime minister Mateusz Morawiecki introduced the case after clashing with the EU over various issues including LGBTQ+ rights. The European Commission has since spoken out against the ruling while reaffirming its primacy of Poland and its national law. “We will analyse the ruling of Polish Constitutional…

Polish region abandons ‘LGBT-free’ zone status after EU funding threat

Swietkorzyskie revoked its anti-LGBTQ+ commitment after the European Union threatened to take away its funding. The regional assembly of Swietkorzyskie voted for the removal of the status on 22 September, becoming the first time an area in Poland has done so. According to Euronews, the Polish government asked areas to revoke the declaration and no one at the meeting opposed stepping back from ‘LGBT-free’ status – though three councillors abstained. Around 100 towns and regions have made the pledge to oppose “LGBT ideology” since 2019, which they say undermines Poland’s…

Poland’s chief rabbi Michael Schudrich condemns “LGBT-free zones”

Poland’s chief rabbi has spoken out against the country’s harmful “LGBT-free” zones in a new statement. During a panel discussion for The Aguda’s Pride in the Living Room series, rabbi Michael Schudrich said that discriminatory zones are against an array of Jewish laws. “As far as I can tell, creating “LGBT free” zones is against the Halacha,” he said. “Every Jew should know that they are welcome, and if that someone tells them they are not welcome, that person is incorrect. “Yes, we have differences, so what? Creating Jewish unity…
