“It’s relief, it’s satisfaction”: Drag Race star Crystal on winning libel case against Laurence Fox

Drag Race UK star Crystal says she is feeling “a mix of emotions” after winning her libel case against Laurence Fox. Yesterday (29 January), a High Court judge ruled that the right-wing commentator and actor had libelled both Crystal, who is known as Colin Seymour out of drag, and former Stonewall trustee Simon Blake when he falsely branded them “peadophiles” on social media in October 2020.  He had used the term against the pair after they and actress Nicola Thorp accused him of being racist over his response to Sainsbury’s…

UK MPs to introduce draft bill banning all forms of ‘conversion therapy’

Backbench MPs from multiple political parties have worked together to draft legislation that would ban all forms of so-called ‘conversion therapy’. According to ITV News, the bill will “prohibit practices whose predetermined purpose is to change or suppress a person’s sexuality, or change or suppress a person to or from being transgender.” It is set to be introduced in the House of Commons on 6 December. Labour MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle drafted the legislation, with nine Conservative MPs supporting it. These include Caroline Nokes, Chair of the Women and Equalities Committee,…

Exclusive: 80% of LGBTQ+ people want the Gender Recognition Act reformed

Reforming the 2004 Gender Recognition Act (GRA) is ‘very important’ to a majority of LGBTQ+ people, a joint survey from GAY TIMES and Channel 4 News has found. The Act is what allows transgender people to change their legal gender by applying for a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC). However, doing so is a lengthy and complicated process which includes the requirement for a diagnosis of gender dysphoria, as well as the need for a medical report detailing all treatment. In September 2020, the UK government published the results of a…

President Joe Biden has signed an executive order to protect LGBTQ+ people from laws targeting them in conservative states. Law banning gender-affirming care for trans youth takes effect in Alabama

Alabama has implemented a law that makes providing gender-affirming medical care to transgender youth a felony. Those giving trans people under the age of 19 puberty blockers, hormones and medical procedures could face up to 10 years in prison. US District Judge Liles Burke has not yet indicated when he will rule on a motion seeking to temporarily halt the ban after a two-day hearing reached its end on 6 May, two days before the law went into effect. A lawsuit against the legislation, which was signed by Governor Kay…

Guatemala Congress votes to ban same-sex marriage and teaching of sexual diversity in schools

Guatemala’s Congress has voted to ban same-sex marriage and teaching that “anything other than heterosexuality is normal” in schools. The Protection of Life and Family law was passed by 160 votes in favour to just eight votes against on 9 March. It predominantly targets the LGBTQ+ community, as well as worsening punishments for those seeking an abortion – a practice that is already illegal in the country except in cases where the pregnancy poses a threat to life. Alejandro Giammattei, Guatemala’s president and a conservative, will have to give the…

Polish govt introduces ‘de-facto ban’ on LGBTQ+ teaching in schools

Poland’s parliament has approved a law that will essentially ban teaching LGBTQ-inclusive topics in schools. On the afternoon of 13 January, the educational reform was adopted into law after being debated in the Sejm (the lower house of Poland’s parliament) a day earlier. Named ‘Lex Czarnek’ or ‘Czarnek’s Law’ after minister of education Przemysław Czarnek, its contents bring the country in line with Hungary and Russia who previously adopted similar anti-propaganda legislation. It gives superintendents the power to overrule any teaching materials that are given to schools by outside groups,…
