Germany unveils plans to simplify the process of legally changing gender

Germany is introducing legislation that will allow anyone over the age of 14 to alter their registered gender, the law will also make deadnaming (referring to a transgender person by their previous name) a crime. The current “transsexual law” as it is named, dates back to 1981 and treats gender identity as a medical problem. Gender can only be changed on official documents after two psychiatric reports which can subject trans people to invasive and extensive questioning. Lisa Paus, the German minister for family affairs, said: “In many ways we…

Tavistock gender clinic to be replaced with local hubs to help cut waiting times

The Tavistock and Portman Hospital is set to be replaced by regional hubs in an effort to dramatically cut waiting times for young people seeking gender dysphoria services. The Tavistock is the NHS’ only gender identity clinic for children, but has struggled to adequately see patients quickly enough through its current service model. A new report has suggested that “lengthy” waiting times is putting vulnerable children at “considerable risk” as they seek treatment. Dr Hillary Cass, who has produced the interim report, has suggested that a “fundamentally different” service model…

Facing abortion barriers, trans men warn of the risks

It was getting an abortion after being raped as a teenager that drove transgender man Adri Perez to help set up an LGBTQ-inclusive fund in the U.S. state of Texas to support others wanting to end their pregnancies. The Supreme Court’s reversal of the 1973 Roe v. Wade ruling that legalised abortion in the United States has spotlighted global inequalities in access to the procedure, including for trans men, who face challenges from gendered abortion laws to economic marginalisation and discrimination. For Perez, co-founder of the Texas-based West Fund –…

Doctor “very optimistic” over womb transplant that could allow trans women to carry a baby

A doctor in India is “very optimistic” that he could carry out a womb transplant that could enable transgender women to carry a baby. “Womb transplants have been performed all over the world, with more than 70 procedures carried out so far,” an April 2021 report from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists states. “At least 23 babies have been born as a result, demonstrating that womb transplants can work. While the procedure offers a different option to adoption and surrogacy, it is associated with significant risks, including multiple…

Law banning gender-affirming care for trans youth takes effect in Alabama

Alabama has implemented a law that makes providing gender-affirming medical care to transgender youth a felony. Those giving trans people under the age of 19 puberty blockers, hormones and medical procedures could face up to 10 years in prison. US District Judge Liles Burke has not yet indicated when he will rule on a motion seeking to temporarily halt the ban after a two-day hearing reached its end on 6 May, two days before the law went into effect. A lawsuit against the legislation, which was signed by Governor Kay…
