UN Women UK faces backlash over Munroe Bergdorf appointment

Munroe Bergdorf’s appointment as the ‘UK Champion’ for UN Women UK is unsurprisingly being subjected to backlash from a number of gender critical campaigners.  The new role was announced in November of last year, with Bergdorf serving as its first-ever appointee.  However, in an open letter published more than a month later on 28 December, gender critical campaign groups such as Fair Play for Women, Transgender Trend and the Women’s Rights Network – all of which are notorious for their anti-trans stances – shared “dismay and disappointment” over Bergdorf taking…

How trans+ history is being put top of the curriculum in summer 2024

Taking place from 6 to 12 May 2024, Trans+ History Week is a QueerAF-launched initiative celebrating the millennia-old history of trans, non-binary, gender-diverse and intersex people.  WORDS BY ALICE MOREY Have you heard of Mary Mudge? What about Mark Weston or Michael Dillon? These are just some of the names of trans+ figures from British history, individuals who lived in the 19th and early 20th century and who remind us that trans stories – whether we’ve been taught about them or not – have always existed.  The delivery of transgender history…

Countries to be removed from UK’s gender recognition list over self-ID laws

A number of countries’ Gender Recognition Certificates (GRCs) will no longer be recognised by the UK government, it has been announced. Kemi Badenoch, who is both the Women and Equalities minister and the Business Secretary, told MPs that countries where self-identification policies for transgender people have been adopted will be removed from its list of approved regions. “This is long overdue,” she said on 6 December. “The list of approved overseas countries and territories was last updated in 2011.” Badenoch continued: “We are doing this because there are some countries…

UK government accused of “frightful negligence” after ‘conversion therapy’ ban excluded from King’s Speech

Five years since the UK government first promised to ban so-called ‘conversion therapy’, campaigners fear that no legislation will ever materialise under Rishi Sunak’s leadership after there was no mention of it in the King’s Speech. The annual speech, which this year took place on 7 November, is an opportunity for the government to lay out its plans for the upcoming year, as well as the laws it intends to pass in order to achieve its goals. There was outrage, however, when King Charles III did not acknowledge ‘conversion therapy’…

Makeover in Manipur: Trans-run beauty salons brave bloodshed

It’s hard to style hair, pluck brows and do makeovers when armed troops are on the streets suppressing months of deadly clashes. Harder still if you’re a transgender 30-something running a professional salon in socially conservative India. But Bobbii Laishram is not ready to quit her job yet. “I set up Bobbii Hair Art Studio in September of 2012,” Laishram told Openly in a phone interview. “I like styling, so after passing out of school, I took a beautician and hair course,” said Laishram, winner of the 2010 trans beauty…
