Dwyane and Zaya Wade announce new “resource hub” for LGBTQ+ youth

Dwyane Wade and his daughter Zaya have teamed up for a new project supporting LGBTQIA+ youth.  On 23 May, the former NBA Hall of Famer and 16-year-old model took to Instagram to announce their new non-profit Translatable – which is supported by The Trevor Project and Human Rights Campaign.  “Translatable aims to serve as a community safe space for youth to express themselves through several creative outlets,” Zaya explained alongside her father.  “Here we focus on communities of colour, center the most marginalised and emphasise the importance of parents and…

Majority of LGBTQ+ youth screen positive for depression, survey finds

Approximately 55.1 per cent of all LGBTQ+ youth screen positive for depression, according to a new survey conducted by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC). The 2023 LGBTQ+ Report compiled the findings of the HRC’s 2022 Youth Survey. The results revealed “persistent, serious challenges for LGBTQ+ youth” across the USA, continuing the trends observed by its 2017 study. The statistic was even higher for trans and gender-expansive youth, with 60 per cent screening positive for depression. The report also investigated the safety and comfort of LGBTQ+ youth in home and school environments.…

NHS England to stop prescribing puberty blockers for trans youth at gender clinics

The NHS England has revealed new restrictions for the prescription of puberty blockers.  On 9 June, the publically funded health service announced that it will no longer give hormone-blocking medicine to trans youth attending gender clinics.  “Outside of a research setting, puberty–suppressing hormones should not be routinely commissioned for children and adolescents who have gender incongruence/dysphoria,” the NHS said regarding its new “interim policy.”  Instead, puberty blockers will only be made available to children who take part in clinical trials or under specific circumstances – including those who had a…

Boygenius condemns the rise of anti-trans bills at Coachella 2023: “Trans lives matter”

Boygenius slammed the rise of anti-trans legislation during their Coachella performance. Over the last few years, Republican lawmakers have ruthlessly targeted the rights of trans individuals. Since the start of 2023, over 400 anti-trans bills have been introduced across 48 states. According to American Civil Liberties Union, Arkansas, West Virginia, Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho have already passed laws banning trans people from life-saving health care, sports participation, and using bathrooms aligned with their gender identity. In response to the continued attacks on trans people and the LGBTQ+ community as a…

Dwyane Wade explains why he disabled comments on Zaya’s Instagram

Basketball star Dwyane Wade has opened up about his decision to limit the comments on his daughter’s Instagram. Over the last few years, Wade and his wife, Gabrielle Union, have made an active effort to foster a loving and affirming environment for their trans daughter Zaya – who came out in 2019 at the age of 12. However, like most teens around the world, Zaya has started to carve out her own lane in the expansive and, at times, harsh social media world. In a recent interview with the Today…

Oklahoma hospital forced to ban gender-affirming care for trans youth due to law

In a massive blow to LGBTQ+ rights, a prominent Oklahoma-based hospital has ended its gender-affirming care for trans youth due to an archaic new law. On 4 October, the state’s conservative governor Kevin Stitt signed Senate Bill 3 into law.  Under the new legislation, the University of Oklahoma Medical Center and its children’s hospital will be eligible to receive over $108 million in federal funds from the American Rescue Plan Act. However, due to Stitt’s anti-trans political stance, the prestigious hospital will only be able to collect the funds if…

Texas judge expands temporary order blocking investigations into families of trans youth

A Texas judge has expanded a statewide injunction blocking harmful “child abuse” investigations into parents of trans youth. Back in February, Attorney General Ken Paxton released an official opinion denouncing gender-affirming care. He also said that the life-saving treatments should be considered “child abuse”. Shortly after his harmful statement, Governor Greg Abbott released his own transphobic letter – which ordered the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) to start investigations into parents of trans youth. “Because the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS) is responsible for…

Florida governor Ron DeSantis seeks to ban gender-affirming care for trans youth and Medicaid recipients

Florida governor Ron DeSantis asked the state’s medical board to ban gender-affirming care for trans individuals. Over the last year and a half, the Republican official has consistently attacked the LGBTQ+ community with harmful legislation. During Pride Month in 2021, DeSantis banned transgender girls and women from competing in school sports. His crusade against the LGBTQ+ community continued earlier this year when he signed the highly controversial ‘Don’t Say Gay’ bill into law. The legislation, which is officially called the Parental Rights in Education bill, restricts “classroom discussion about sexual orientation…
