Texas governor Greg Abbott signs bill banning gender-affirming care for trans youth

Texas has become the 18th state to ban gender-affirming care for trans youth. Over the last few years, the state’s Republican governor Greg Abbott and his political allies have made it their mission to attack the rights of trans people.  Back in February 2022, Attorney General Ken Paxton released an official opinion denouncing gender-affirming care. He also said that the life-saving treatments should be considered “child abuse”. Shortly after his harmful statement, Abbott released his own transphobic letter – which ordered the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS)…

Texas superintendent effortlessly shuts down attorney general over Pride Week complaints

Texas superintendent Stephanie S. Elizalde clapped back against Attorney General Ken Paxton over an LGBTQ+ inclusive school event.  For the last few months, Paxton has made horrific and harmful comments towards the LGBTQ+ community – specifically queer and trans youth. Recently, he accused the Austin Independent School District (AISD) of breaking “Texas law” due to their recent Pride Week celebration.  The annual event, which took place between 21 March and 26 March, celebrated “LGBTQIA+ students, staff and families.” Even though the week-long festivities have been a yearly staple within the…

Texas judge issues temporary order blocking the governor’s anti-trans directives

In a small step for LGBTQ+ rights in Texas, investigations into gender-affirming care for trans youth have been temporarily banned.  Over the last few weeks, Governor Greg Abbott has attacked the trans youth community with his harmful statements and directives.  On the evening of 11 March, District Judge Amy Clark Meachum implemented the statewide injunction. “The court finds sufficient cause to enter a temporary injunction,” she said.  The judge also informed the court that Abbott’s transphobic directives were “beyond the scope of his authority and unconstitutional.”  In response to the…

Texas district attorneys condemn governor Greg Abbott and his anti-trans directives

District attorneys in Texas have slammed Governor Greg Abbott and attorney general Ken Paxton over their harmful anti-trans directives. On 18 February, Paxton released an opinion denouncing gender-affirming care and even said that it could be considered child abuse under the state’s law. Following the attorney general’s archaic statements, Abbott released his own transphobic letter – which ordered investigations into the life-saving treatments. In a joint Twitter statement on 24 February, five district attorneys from across the state condemned Abbott and Paxton’s “life-threatening directives.” “We are deeply disturbed by Governor…
