‘Conversion therapy’ has become symbolic of how the government has failed trans people

With the latest attempt to ban ‘conversion therapy’ thwarted, the debate has become symbolic of how the UK government handles LGBTQIA+ issues. WORDS BY CONOR CLARK In 2018, the government vowed to eradicate so-called ‘conversion therapy’ for the first time. Six years later, LGBTQIA+ people are still waiting for a ban to actually materialise. “I believe that this government has lost the trust, respect and frankly, votes of the vast majority of the LGBT community as a result,” says Jayne Ozanne, a campaigner and ‘conversion therapy’ survivor who has been a…

UK MPs to introduce draft bill banning all forms of ‘conversion therapy’

Backbench MPs from multiple political parties have worked together to draft legislation that would ban all forms of so-called ‘conversion therapy’. According to ITV News, the bill will “prohibit practices whose predetermined purpose is to change or suppress a person’s sexuality, or change or suppress a person to or from being transgender.” It is set to be introduced in the House of Commons on 6 December. Labour MP Lloyd Russell-Moyle drafted the legislation, with nine Conservative MPs supporting it. These include Caroline Nokes, Chair of the Women and Equalities Committee,…

UK government accused of “frightful negligence” after ‘conversion therapy’ ban excluded from King’s Speech

Five years since the UK government first promised to ban so-called ‘conversion therapy’, campaigners fear that no legislation will ever materialise under Rishi Sunak’s leadership after there was no mention of it in the King’s Speech. The annual speech, which this year took place on 7 November, is an opportunity for the government to lay out its plans for the upcoming year, as well as the laws it intends to pass in order to achieve its goals. There was outrage, however, when King Charles III did not acknowledge ‘conversion therapy’…

PM accused of “moral failing” for delay in banning ‘conversion therapy’

Rishi Sunak has been accused of failing victims of so-called ‘conversion therapy’ as survivors continue to wait for legislation banning it. In an open letter sent to both the Prime Minister and the equalities minister Kemi Badenoch on 17 July, a number of senior parliamentarians, religious leaders, medical professionals, human rights leaders and prominent LGBTQ+ voices called on the government to fulfil its promise of outlawing the harmful practice. “Not only has the delay damaged the lives of countless vulnerable LGBT+ victims, it has also emboldened perpetrators to act with…

Church of England to bless same-sex unions – though ban on marriage remains

The Church of England will offer blessings to same-sex couples in civil partnerships and marriages, though they will still be unable to get married in church. The motion was passed in all three of the Synod’s – the Church’s equivalent of a parliament – ‘houses’ following a near-eight-hour debate across 8 and 9 February. The Archbishop of York, the Most Revd Stephen Cottrell, told the Synod that priests can still choose not to bless same-sex couples. “No-one has to offer these services and no one will be disadvantaged if they…

“Deeply unjust”: Activists demand LGBTQ+ equality in Church of England

Dozens gathered outside Lambeth Palace on 23 January to demand equality for LGBTQ+ people in the Church of England. Organised and led by Jayne Ozanne, a gay Christian activist who chairs the Ban Conversion Therapy Coalition, the peaceful demonstration took place ahead of a reception for around 100 parliamentarians. Activists stood in silence as they held candles and placards, which had messages such as “Apology not accepted, Archbishop!” and “Discrimination is not a Christian value!” written on them. It was attended by Church of England clergy, ordinands and lay members…

UK government finally announces draft bill to ban ‘conversion therapy’ for all

The UK government has today announced its intention to publish a draft bill to ban so-called ‘conversion therapy’ for all – though its exact details remain unclear. “We will be publishing a draft bill to ban conversion practices, protecting everyone,” a government spokesperson confirmed on 17 January. “The Bill will go through pre legislative scrutiny in this parliamentary session. We hope to send it to a Joint Committee for scrutiny and will work with the Liaison Committee accordingly. “There are clearly issues that are not fully resolved. We are determined…

Scottish gender bill: Activists condemn UK government for “vicious attack” on trans people

The UK government’s decision to block Scotland’s Gender Recognition Reform Bill from getting royal assent has been met with widespread backlash from LGBTQ+ activists. The move was confirmed by Alister Jack, the Scotland Secretary, on 16 January when he announced that he will lay a Section 35 order at Westminster to prevent the legislation reaching its final stage – marking the first time in the 25 years since devolution that the British government has taken this step. “I have not taken this decision lightly,” Jack said in a statement. “The…

UK government could deem Scottish gender recognition certificates invalid

Transgender people in Scotland will have to apply for a UK gender recognition certificate in order to be recognised outside of the country under changes expected to be made by ministers. In a written statement shared on 9 January, Kemi Badenoch, the Minister for Women and Equalities, announced a review into “the list of approved overseas countries and territories” in relation to which international gender certificates the UK recognises. “There are now some countries and territories on the list who have made changes to their systems since then and would…
