Constituents encouraged to email UK MPs ahead of second reading for ‘conversion therapy’ ban bill

An online campaign urging UK MPs to attend the second reading of a so-called ‘conversion therapy’ ban bill has a month to go until its deadline. Taking place on 1 March, the second reading of a private members bill to ban the harmful practice was brought forward by Lloyd Russell-Moyle, Labour MP for Kemptown and Peacehaven. Russell-Moyle was one of many non-governmental MPs who, through a lottery system, were selected to introduce the bill. Stonewall, an LGBTQIA+ rights charity in the UK, has created a petition to show their support…

LGBTQ+ young people’s charity issues warning against trans school policy from UK government

Just Like Us, the LGBTQIA+ young people’s charity, has issued a warning against the proposed school guidance from the UK government. “We recommend schools do not implement this draft, non-statutory guidance,” Just Like Us said. On 19 December, the government released a new draft for children questioning their gender, ‘non-statutory guidance for schools and colleges in England’, after initially promising this in 2018. Teachers have been advised to inform parents if their child wishes to change their gender identity at school. Information will be withheld if the pupil is considered…

PM accused of “moral failing” for delay in banning ‘conversion therapy’

Rishi Sunak has been accused of failing victims of so-called ‘conversion therapy’ as survivors continue to wait for legislation banning it. In an open letter sent to both the Prime Minister and the equalities minister Kemi Badenoch on 17 July, a number of senior parliamentarians, religious leaders, medical professionals, human rights leaders and prominent LGBTQ+ voices called on the government to fulfil its promise of outlawing the harmful practice. “Not only has the delay damaged the lives of countless vulnerable LGBT+ victims, it has also emboldened perpetrators to act with…

UK government could deem Scottish gender recognition certificates invalid

Transgender people in Scotland will have to apply for a UK gender recognition certificate in order to be recognised outside of the country under changes expected to be made by ministers. British public overwhelmingly support LGBTQ+ people in sport, study finds

Stonewall has launched its ninth Rainbow Laces campaign by urging people to “stand up and call out” anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination at the World Cup in Qatar. The tournament has been marred with controversy since it was announced that it would take place in the Gulf state, where homosexuality is illegal and the LGBTQ+ community is subjected to discriminatory laws. “As we approach the 2022 Men’s World Cup, we must remember that Qatar is a country where LGBTQ+ people are persecuted simply for being themselves,” said Liz Ward, the Director of Programmes…
