Persuasion is an enjoyable modern take on classic Jane Austen novel – review

We’re always fans of productions that do the unconventional, and Persuasion – Jeff James and James Yeatman’s modern adaptation of the classic Jane Austen novel of the same name – could hardly be described as traditional. With a soundtrack featuring Lizzo, Cardi B and Dua Lipa, and one particularly memorable scene reframed as a foam party, it’s a high energy show with plenty of fun moments. It also manages to remain surprisingly faithful to its source material. There are some genuinely very amusing gags. Observations are wittily reinterpreted – notions…

To Kill A Mockingbird is a remarkable theatrical achievement – review

Every so often, a piece of theatre comes along which is just so remarkable that we can’t recommend it highly enough. Aaron Sorkin’s adaptation of Harper Lee’s classic novel To Kill A Mockingbird, which originally debuted on Broadway in 2018 and has recently opened at London’s Gielgud Theatre, is one such play. For British people of a certain generation this will be a well-known story – it has been, for many years, something of a staple on the school curriculum. It concerns the story of the Finch family, specifically Atticus…

Anyone Can Whistle is a bold revival of elusive Sondheim musical – review

Anyone Can Whistle was a flop when it first opened on Broadway in 1964, closing after just nine performances. The first major production of a Sondheim show since the composer’s death is Southwark Playhouse’s bold revival of this elusive work – from our experience it’s not difficult to see why it wasn’t a success first time around. There’s nothing inherently wrong with Sondheim’s score – far from his finest collection of songs, but ‘Anyone Can Whistle’ and ‘There Won’t Be Trumpets’ are both excellent – the issue lies with Arthur…

All-Male HMS Pinafore is a comic delight at Wilton’s Music Hall – review

We’ve seen Sasha Regan’s All-Male company before, when they performed The Pirates of Penzance at London’s Palace Theatre back in 2020. Having been impressed by that our expectations were high for their revival of Gilbert and Sullivan’s comic operetta HMS Pinafore at Wilton’s Music Hall and thankfully we were not disappointed – this is an absolute delight of a show from the off. Regan’s version was first staged at the Union Theatre back in 2013 before touring the UK; it’s now returned to London for a limited run. For those…

The Merchant of Venice is a smart retelling of tricky text – review

We’re big fans of the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse – it’s a gorgeous little space, nestled inside the Globe on London’s Southbank, and is entirely candlelit. Seeing a play here certainly is an experience – it really is like stepping back in time. The intimacy facilitated by the proximity of the actors to the audience really makes us feel like we’re all involved in some sort of communal, almost immersive event – we love spending a couple of hours in this gem of a venue. The Merchant of Venice is one…

Jean Paul Gaultier’s Fashion Freak Show returns to light up London at Roundhouse residency

We caught the fabulous Fashion Freak Show at the Southbank Centre back in 2019 when it made its London debut, following an acclaimed premiere at Folies Bergère in Paris. After a two-year break we’re delighted it’s back to light up the London stage once more, this time with a new home at the iconic Roundhouse in Camden. We’re told the production has been re-imagined and re-staged for this venue and now incorporates a catwalk – we can’t wait to see how that turns out! More a cabaret review than a straightforward…

Old Vic’s A Number is a smart nature vs nurture thought experiment – review

Lyndsey Turner’s revival of Caryl Churchill’s 2002 cloning drama, A Number, has opened at the Old Vic. Lasting barely an hour, A Number is an impressive piece of theatre. Starring two internationally renowned actors – The Walking Dead’s Lennie James as the father, Salter, and I May Destroy You’s Paapa Essiedu as three of his sons – it considers the idea of cloning and how that might impact our sense of identity. During the show we are introduced to the original son, the ‘clone’ who Salter had created after becoming…

Cirque Du Soleil return to London stage with daring theatrical spectacular Luzia – review

As part of the Royal Albert Hall’s 150th birthday celebrations, the internationally renowned circus troupe have brought their Luzia production back to London after almost two years. Luzia was one of the last major productions we caught pre-pandemic, as it made its European debut at the Royal Albert Hall in spring 2020. We’re pleased that Cirque Du Soleil have brought this show back – billing itself as “a waking dream of Mexico”, the whole production exudes a surreal, dreamlike quality, quite unlike anything else on London’s stages at the moment.…

Tamsin Greig delights in entertaining revival of comedy Peggy For You – review

The latest entry in the Hampstead Theatre’s 60th anniversary season is a revival of Alan Plater’s biting comedy Peggy For You, directed by Richard Wilson. Continuing the Hampstead Theatre’s anniversary season of reviving works that originated there, Peggy For You is a new production of Alan Plater’s witty play telling the story of formidable theatre agent Margaret Ramsay (Tamsin Greig) – or Peggy, to her clients – which debuted at the Hampstead back in 1999 and was nominated for the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy. Over the course of…
