LGBTQ+ theatre Above The Stag closes due to financial issues

Above The Stag, a queer performance space in Vauxhall, has closed due to financial challenges and work required on the property. The south London venue has had to close immediately as a result. A new production recently started its run there. It is the UK’s only exclusively LGBTQ+ theatre and charity. Over the years, it has staged award-winning productions, sponsored new talent and provided space for queer theatre. In a statement released via Twitter, operations director and producer Andy Hill, wrote: “The past 5 years, in our beautiful Vauxhall home,…

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a magical revival of a timeless tale – review

It’s difficult to go wrong with CS Lewis’ timeless tale – it’s a story that many of us here in the UK have grown up with and hold fond memories of. This revival, from director Michael Fentiman – based on the 2017 production by Sally Cookson – is absolutely magical; full of wonder and spectacle, it looks just like we imagined in our minds when we read the original novel. There’s a lot of music in this production, although it remains very much a ‘play with songs’ as opposed to…

Briefs: Bite Club is a unique concept and great fun – review

We’re not quite sure how to explain Briefs, for those who’ve not seen the Australian troupe before. It’s quite the theatre spectacle – part burlesque, part cabaret, part circus, part comedy and a whole lot of fun. For their new show Bite Club they also have a live band, fronted by vocalist Sahara Beck who performs a number of original songs. During the show they describe the performance as a series of real-life music videos and that’s a pretty good summary – each song is accompanied by something unique and…

Musical adaptation of 101 Dalmatians feels like a missed opportunity – review

Zinnie Harris’ new stage adaptation of the classic Dodie Smith novel, with music and lyrics by Douglas Hodge and book by Johnny McKnight, is a show with a lot of potential. Originally expected to debut in summer 2020 but delayed two years due to Covid, it’s now on in the coveted prime slot of the Open Air Theatre’s summer season. It stars the excellent Kate Fleetwood as the infamous Cruella De Vil and is packed full of puppetry – it has all the ingredients for a perfect summer’s evening in…

Stranger Things star David Harbour shines alongside Bill Pullman in Mad House – review

The latest big-name show to open at London’s Ambassadors Theatre, Mad House, is a new play written by Theresa Rebeck. It features David Harbour – best known for the role of Hopper in hit TV series Stranger Things – starring opposite veteran film and theatre performer Bill Pullman. It’s a dark comedy, exploring themes of death and mental health, and spends most of its time presenting the audience with a dysfunctional family at war with one another. Bill Pullman plays the role of cantankerous patriarch Daniel, who is suffering from…

Old Vic’s Jitney is a fascinating social commentary – review

Unfolding inside a small but stylish box set, Jitney tells the story of several unlicensed cab drivers in 1970s America. It’s part of August Wilson’s Pittsburgh Cycle of 10 plays – which chronicle the African-American experience during each decade of the 20th century, and is perhaps most famous for the film adaptations of Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom and Fences. Jitney is the second play from this cycle we’ve had the opportunity to see, after reviewing the London production of King Hedley II in 2019. It’s a fascinating social commentary: over…

What is there to say about Romeo and Juliet that hasn’t already been said? Hilarious musical Operation Mincemeat is one of the best shows in town – review

We went to review Operation Mincemeat last summer when it opened at the Southwark Playhouse and we absolutely adored it – describing this quirky little musical as “fun, funny and an absolute must-see”. There have been some changes over the last year: Sean Carey is currently standing in for original cast member David Cumming, who is out due to injury; the show has a new home, at Hammersmith’s Riverside Studios; and we spotted a handful of new jokes, including a knowing nod alluding to the new feature film of the…

Middle is a bit of a muddle at National Theatre – review

We had high hopes for David Eldridge’s new play – the second part in a trilogy, Middle follows on from 2017’s Beginning, which we caught when it transferred to the West End and we absolutely loved it. A cleverly-constructed two-hander, over the course of 100 minutes we gained an insight into the beginnings of a potential romance – guy meets girl at a house party, a conversation ensues, one thing leads to another and… well, you know how it goes. Beginning was a play overflowing with clever lines, dripping with…
