Treason the Musical shows promise but doesn’t feel quite ready – review

There’s been a fair bit of hype surrounding Treason the Musical since its inception. Originally released as a 5-track EP, there were subsequent staged concert versions of the show on London’s West End, starring big names including Rosalie Craig and Carrie Hope Fletcher. The fully-staged version of the musical opened last month at Edinburgh’s Festival Theatre; these performances were followed by a short run at the Sheffield Lyceum and it now finds itself at London’s Alexandra Palace. There are a pair of performances scheduled at the London Palladium later in the…

Penelope Wilton and Luke Evans star in camp comedy Backstairs Billy – review

Picture the scene: against a backdrop of political turmoil, a cost of living crisis and constant public sector strikes, we find ourselves – perhaps surprisingly not in the present day – but instead in 1979, with the UK about to elect its first female prime minister in what will eventually prove to be a seismic shift in British politics. Inside Clarence House, however, it’s business as usual; The Queen Mother (Penelope Wilton) is entertaining the usual quirky parade of guests, ably supported by her favourite page Billy (Luke Evans). Backstairs…

McOnie Company’s Nutcracker at the Tuff Nutt Jazz Club is a festive delight – review

It may only be early November but, having visited new pop-up venue the Tuff Nutt Jazz Club over the weekend to check out this contemporary Nutcracker, we’re feeling very much in the Christmas spirit already. A bespoke, intimate venue within the Southbank Centre, this cosy space is the perfect setting for this new show which proves to be a festive delight. Directed and choreographed by Drew McOnie and with Tchaikovsky’s score re-imagined by jazz composer Cassie Kinoshi, this is a cunningly condensed one-hour wonder. It is very much an interpretation…

The Time Traveller’s Wife musical is a sweet but shallow new show – review

For those unfamiliar, The Time Traveller’s Wife is Audrey Niffenegger’s enduringly popular 2003 novel which has already been adapted into a film and a TV series – so a stage show seems the next logical progression. This production stars David Hunter (Kinky Boots, Waitress) as time traveller Henry and Joanna Woodward (Pretty Woman) as wife Clare; over the course of two and a half hours we follow their non-linear story through the 1980s and 1990s. With music written by Joss Stone and Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart, and a book by Lauren…

Joseph Fiennes stars in West End transfer of National Theatre hit Dear England – review

We went to check out Dear England when it premiered earlier this year at the National Theatre, and we enjoyed it so much we thought we’d pay a return visit now it’s transferred to the West End – it’s currently playing at the Prince Edward Theatre in Soho. As we noted at the time, a play about the English football team may not be the sort of show we’d normally feature – for a whole variety of reasons, queer people may have a difficult relationship with football and the culture…

NT’s The Confessions is a clever consideration of an ordinary life – review

Where to start with a show like The Confessions? It’s far from a conventional play – we’re not here to see a straightforward story, a snapshot into a moment in time with everything nicely wrapped up two hours later. Instead, The Confessions is based on the life of Alice, who is the mother of the play’s writer Alexander Zeldin. We’re essentially navigating her life story here, told from the moment she graduates high school in Australia in 1943 through to a near present-day London. Alice considers herself to have lived…

Nicole Scherzinger stars in radical revival of Sunset Boulevard – review

The Jamie Lloyd Company likes to do things differently and this radical revival of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s classic musical Sunset Boulevard is no exception. Over the summer we caught their production of The Effect at the National Theatre and a few years ago we saw their previous collaboration with Lloyd Webber, a revival of Evita at the Open Air Theatre – in both cases we were impressed with how daring and unusual the staging was, with minimalist sets and clever use of lighting and sound. Sunset Boulevard takes these production elements…

All-star cast delight in wonderfully silly revival of Noises Off – review

We reviewed a production of Noises Off a few years ago, so we had a fair idea of what to expect, but for the uninitiated, Michael Frayn’s 1982 farce is a wonderfully silly slapstick comedy. A play-within-a-play, we’re introduced to the cast and creative team behind fictional comedy Nothing On, and notionally we watch the same thing – the show’s first act – three times over. Act one offers us a glimpse into the tech run the night before the show opens, while act two gives us a behind-the-scenes look…

It’s A Sin star Nathaniel Hall to debut new show Toxic at Home Manchester – interview

We’re big fans of Nathaniel Hall here – he was, of course, star of our screens in Russell T Davies’ hit show It’s A Sin, playing the role of boyfriend Donald opposite Olly Alexander’s Richie. We interviewed Nathaniel later in 2021 following the success of that TV show and ahead of the tour of his own play First Time, which we reviewed last year. Later this month, Nathaniel will return with his new play, Toxic, which is scheduled to open at Home Manchester on Wednesday 18th October. When we meet…

Andrew Scott is captivating in radical adaptation of Vanya – review

Andrew Scott is one of our favourite actors – he may be best-known for his TV work (Fleabag, Sherlock) but we adore seeing him on-stage. We caught him a few years ago on the West End in Hamlet and this week we had the pleasure of seeing him again in Vanya, a radical one-person adaptation of Anton Chekhov’s masterpiece Uncle Vanya. It’s a bold re-telling, now set on a farm in Ireland, in a more modern (although perhaps not quite present day) setting, and all the characters’ names have been…
