5 LGBTQ+ queer movies you need to catch at Sundance

Here, GAY TIMES’ Contributing Editor Jamie Windust selects upcoming LGBTQIA+ Sundance movies that need to be on your radar. WORDS BY JAIMIE WINDUST  HEADER DESIGN BY YOSEF PHELAN With awards season in full swing, the past twelve months in cinema are being given their moment in the sun; with red carpet glamour only somewhat dampened by toe-curling monologues from unfunny male ‘comedians’.  So, as the stars sit down to sip champagne and attempt to avoid being caught gossiping on camera, Sundance Film Festival 2024 is preparing to show the next…

Welcome to the ‘Sophaissance’: the return of Sophie Ellis-Bextor’s brand of chart (and FYP) dominating pop

The British musician weighs in on that Barry Keoghan scene in Saltburn, her camp classic Heinz campaign, and answers burning questions from her die-hard fans. WORDS BY NICK LEVINE COVER DESIGN YOSEF PHELAN PHOTOGRAPHY BY LAURA LEWIS Sophie Ellis-Bextor isn’t just having a moment – she is the moment. Everyone who’s watched Emerald Fennell’s prickly, provocative, queer-coded black comedy Saltburn is obsessed with the scene where Barry Keoghan’s character, scheming social climber Oliver Quick, dances to ‘Murder on the Dancefloor’ in the nude. Gaylor stans, it’s time to separate art and artist

A New York Times op-ed speculating about Taylor Swift’s sexuality is the culmination of a fervent fandom committed to the conspiracy theory of the singer’s queerness. But when did we forget about boundaries?  WORDS BY ZOYA RAZA-SHEIKH HEADER DESIGN BY YOSEF PHELAN As a long-term Swiftie, I’m familiar with the lore surrounding the work and public persona of Taylor Swift. Whether it’s ‘No, it’s Becky’ fandom jokes on Tumblr to the TikTok drama around Swift impersonator Ashley, I’ve seen, heard and read it all. And while we talk a lot…

Luckily, we’ve called in an expert to impart some much-needed advice on how to cope. WORDS BY JAMIE WINDUST  By now, it’s a cliché that the festive period is ~challenging~ for a variety of reasons. But the stereotype isn’t just the central premise of pretty much every festive romcom ever, it also bears more than a grain of truth – especially for individuals under the LGBTQIA+ umbrella.  Of course, there are…

It’s time that asexuality stopped being the lost letter in the LGBTQIA+ acronym

For Asexual Awareness Week, writer Allie Daisy King explores how she came to terms with her asexuality and the need for ace individuals to be recognised by the wider queer community. WORDS BY ALLIE DAISY KING  I spent so much of my life wondering when I was going to get my foot-popping kiss, ever since I first watched The Princess Diaries. Everything I came across had me poised to expect fireworks. Then, when it finally happened, aged 18 in the back of an Uber in Melbourne, I was confused. I…

Texas anti-drag bill blocked again by federal judge

A US judge has extended a temporary order preventing the application of Texas’ law limiting drag performances.   US District Court Judge David Hittner of the Southern District of Texas extended a temporary restrainer order for two weeks which prevents the enforcement of Senate Bill 12.  Senate Bill 12, which restricts “sexually oriented performances” was set to go into effect on 1 September and was originally passed back in April. Bill 12 aims to ban performances on public property where a performance will be viewed by attendees under the age of…
