Greece bans ‘sex-normalising’ surgeries on intersex children

‘Sex-normalising’ surgeries on babies born intersex have been banned in Greece under a new law approved by parliament on 19 July. The Medically Assisted Reproduction Reforms Act prevents doctors from carrying out said operations on people under the age of 15 unless they have a court order stating otherwise. Those who break the law will face fines and time in prison, Reuters reported. Intersex people subjected to these operations in the past have experienced a number of health issues, including sterilisation and loss of sexual sensation. The surgeries attempt to…

UKHSA updates monkeypox guidance as it secures 100,000 additional vaccine doses

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed that close contacts of monkeypox no longer need to isolate if they do not have symptoms. It stated that the change is taking place because a relatively small number of close contacts have gone on to develop monkeypox. There is also a lack of evidence of transmission outside of close and/or intimate contact. This brings the UK’s guidance in line with advice from the World Health Organisation and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. It comes as 100,000 additional vaccine doses…

Monkeypox: Some gay and bisexual men at higher risk of exposure to be offered vaccine

Gay and bisexual men considered to be at higher risk of exposure to monkeypox will be offered a vaccine to control the outbreak of the virus, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed. Data from the latest outbreak shows that there are higher levels of transmission between men who have sex with men, though it is important to remember that anyone can contract monkeypox and the spread is not exclusive to this group. The new vaccination strategy will see individuals assessed on a number of factors to determine whether…

Europe’s monkeypox outbreak sparks fears of anti-LGBTQ+ backlash

When Louis, a 29-year-old gay man, realised he had caught something “nasty”, the doctor initially thought it was herpes. His symptoms started with a rash, followed by a high temperature and blisters on his face. “I was warning any guys I’d had contact with, ‘Be careful – I’ve got something that’s weird’,” Louis, who asked not to use his real name to protect his identity, said by phone. “I called the doctor again and that time he said it was monkeypox.” Louis, who is French and lives in Berlin, is…

Monkeypox: UK confirms four new cases among gay and bisexual men

Four new cases of monkeypox have been identified in the UK, all of which are among gay, bisexual or other men who have sex with men (MSM). The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) said that all appear to have been infected in London, but that investigations are underway and common contacts have been identified in two of the four latest infections. “There is no link to travel to a country where monkeypox is endemic, and exactly where and how they acquired their infections remains under urgent investigation, including whether they…

G-A-Y was given a poor hygiene rating after some of its ice machines were found to have not been cleaned for five years. Two ice machines were covered in mould and bacteria after staff had reportedly not serviced its filtration system for five years, MyLondon reported. As well as this, fruit flies were seen lurking around a sink in the basement of…

Hormones help trans teens, U.S. study finds, as state bans loom

Transgender teenagers prescribed cross-sex hormones are less likely to have suicidal thoughts and other mental health problems as adults, research showed this week as lawmakers in several U.S. states seek to ban the treatment among minors. Debate has grown about the age at which transition treatment should begin as more people come out as trans. Some fear hormones and puberty-blocking drugs are prescribed too early or hastily, but others say access to them can be life-saving. The new paper published by researchers at Stanford University and The Fenway Institute, a…
