US judge throws out Texas ban on drag acts, calls it unconstitutional

A new Texan law limiting public drag performance has been ruled unconstitutional on speech, by a federal judge and permanently forbade enforcement of it. U.S. District Judge David Hittner wrote in the 56 page ruling: “This is no different than a person’s opinion on certain comedy or genres of music, but that alone does not strip First Amendment protection. Not all people will like or condone certain performances.” Hittner ruled that the Texas law was discriminatory and improperly vague. He found that Senate Bill 12 “impermissibly infringes on the First…

Twitter quietly removes policy protecting trans users from deadnaming

Twitter has quietly removed a policy which protected transgender users from deadnaming and misgendering on the social media platform. Its hateful content policy was put in place long before Elon Musk’s highly publicised acquisition of the company. Its ban on misgendering (purposefully referring to someone as the wrong gender) and deadnaming (calling a trans person a name they no longer go by) was introduced in 2018. “We prohibit targeting others with repeated slurs, tropes or other content that intends to dehumanise, degrade or reinforce negative or harmful stereotypes about a…

A League of Their Own showrunner slams recent cancellations of LGBTQ+ shows

A League of Their Own showrunner Will Graham spoke out against the recent cancellations of many LGBTQ+ shows. During his acceptance speech for Outstanding New TV Series at the GLAAD Media Awards, Graham said “it would be strange to accept this award without commenting on the fact that this show is one of the lucky ones”. “So many of the shows that were nominated in this category have been cancelled or quietly cancelled, and that mirrors what’s happening with queer stories across our society and in our classrooms,” he told…

More than four in 10 (44%) Britons think LGBTQ+ people are over-represented on television, according to new findings from YouGov. The survey of 1,000 people also found that roughly the same amount of respondents (45%) believe ethnic minorities are over-represented on screen, with just 26% viewing them as under-represented. Britons were found to be more likely than the five other nationalities surveyed to view broadcast media as an inaccurate representation of society. Shania Twain says she’s “inspired” by drag performers: “It takes a lot of courage”

Shania Twain has showcased her support for drag queens and the LGBTQ+ community amid the rise of anti-drag legislation in the US. Over the last few months, conservative lawmakers have targeted drag shows and drag queens with harmful and strict bills. On 23 February, Tennessee became the first state to ban public drag shows with the archaic Senate Bill 3 (per The Hill). The horrific legislation – which was first introduced in November – would update an existing law banning “adult-oriented businesses” from operating within 1,000 feet of schools, places of…
