Russia expands discriminatory ‘LGBT propaganda’ law to all citizens

President Vladimir Putin has signed a law expanding Russia’s ‘LGBT propaganda’ restrictions to all adults. The move effectively outlaws any public expression of LGBTQ+ behaviour or lifestyle in the country. The original version of it was implemented in 2013 and put a ban on the promotion of all “non-traditional” sexual relationships among minors. It has since been used as justification to stop Pride marches, prevent minors from watching content with LGBTQ+ themes and to detain activists. Under the new legislation, which was signed into law by Putin on 5 December,…

Club Q owner promises venue will reopen after mass shooting

The owner of Club Q, an LGBTQ+ nightclub that suffered a mass shooting in late November, has spoken out his plans for the venue’s future. Club Q was a safe space for LGBTQ+ people in the conservative city of Colorado Springs, which is exactly what is motivating Nic Grzecka to re-open the club in due course. “This community has expressed wholeheartedly their need for the space that we’ve provided for 20 years,” he told NPR. Five people were killed by a gunman in the venue. The suspect, Anderson Lee Aldritch, was…

Russia’s parliament passes law banning ‘LGBT propaganda’ among adults

Russia’s lower house of parliament passed a law expanding its ban on so-called ‘LGBT propaganda’ to all adults. Under the new legislation, which had its third and final reading in the Duma on 24 November, any event or act viewed as an attempt to “promote” homosexuality could result in a fine of up to 400,000 roubles (£5,472) for individuals and 4,000,000 roubles (£68,400) for legal entities. Foreigners in the country could be subjected to 15 days of arrest and possible expulsion from Russia. The discriminatory bill will now be forwarded…

Texas lawmakers continue targeting LGBTQ+ people with new bills

Lawmakers in Texas have introduced 17 anti-LGBTQ+ bills for 2023. Content warning: this story includes topics that could make some readers uncomfortable. Employers in Texas no longer required to cover HIV prevention drugs

A federal judge in Texas stated that employers should not be forced to cover PrEP medication if it violates the company’s religious beliefs. The ruling concluded that providing the drugs makes company owners “complicit in facilitating homosexual behaviour”. US district judge Reed O’Connor made the judgement on 7 September. He ruled in favour of Braidwood Management, a Christian-owned company based in Texas, which argued it was not required to cover the costs of two PrEP drugs, Truvada and Descovy. Legal experts, such as Chris Geidner, noted that O’Connor has a…
