Bros director breaks silence on a potential sequel

Bros director Nicholas Stoller has opened up about making a potential sequel to the hit film.

After months of anticipation, the feel-good LGBTQ+– led project finally hit UK cinemas on 28 October.

Written by Billy Eichner and Stoller (Neighbors), Bros follows New York singletons Bobby Lieber (Eichner) and Aaron (Luke Macfarlane) as they navigate their commitment issues and budding romantic feelings.

Since its release, Bros has earned critical acclaim and even earned an 88% certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The film, which made history as the first gay rom-com from a major Hollywood studio, has also been lauded for its entirely LGBTQ+ principal cast – including Bowen Yang, Ts Madison, Guy Branum, Miss Lawrence, Dot-Marie Jones, Jim Rash, Amanda Bearse and more.

With Bros officially making the rounds worldwide, Stoller has opened up about the possibility of a sequel for the new LGBTQ+ classic.

“I don’t know. You know, it’s hard to think of comedy sequels. But these are all character that I certainly follow into other things, definitely. It’s so funny and rich,” he told Digital Spy.

Elsewhere in his interview, the Neighbours director gave behind-the-scenes tea regarding the movie’s romantic serenade scene – which featured Bobby singing an original gay country song for Aaron.

When discussing the penultimate moment, Stoller revealed that he wanted Eichner’s character to make a grand gesture for Aaron when the two finally made up after their emotional breakup.

“I always felt that Billy needed to make some sort of grand gesture as well. He’s the main character. You want that to happen. Billy agreed but could never really figure out what it was,” he explained to the news outlet.

Stoller went on to say that after Macfarlane told Eichner that his favourite artist was Garth Brooks, the inspiration for the aforementioned scene came to life.

“About two or three weeks before we finished shooting, he called me, and Billy was like: ‘Hey, I wrote this song. I think we need to shoot it,’” he revealed. “Mark Schaiman, our composer, came, and Billy sang it live, and Mark played it live. It was pretty magical.”
