Stranger Things star Maya Hawke says she’s open to her character dying in season 5

Maya Hawke said she has no problem with her character dying in the final season of Stranger Things.

Since joining the popular 80s-centric sci-fi show in 2019, Hawke has made waves for her portrayal of Robin Buckley.

At the beginning of season three, her character was poised as a potential love interest for Steve Harrington (Joe Keery) – which was due to her confession of being obsessed with him.

However, later in the season, Robin clarified her statement and revealed that she was obsessed with him because she had a crush on one of his female admirers.

The emotive reveal was a hit amongst fans, with many praising the Duffer Brothers for introducing an openly queer character.

In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, Hawke opened up about her hopes for Robin in the final season of Stranger Things.

“I would love to die and get my hero’s moment. I’d love to die with honour, as any actor would. But I love the way that the Duffer Brothers love their actors,” she revealed.

“The reason that they write so beautifully for me and for everyone else is because they fall in love with their actors and their characters, and they don’t want to kill them.

“I think that’s a beautiful quality that they have, and I wouldn’t wish it away.”

Towards the end of her interview, Hawke revealed the one requirement for her participation in a Stranger Things spinoff.

“Normally, I wouldn’t really be a proponent of a spinoff, but if I got to do it with Joe Keery, I would do anything,” she admitted.

“He’s so funny and wonderful and smart, and he’s got great boundaries. He’s an excellent coworker, and I would do anything with him.”

Hawke isn’t the only Stranger Things star to open up about the possibility of a main character dying.

“We’re all afraid of one of us dying,” Millie Bobby Brown told The Wrap in May. “One of us will die. Or more. The cast is so big.”

The Enola Holmes star then joked that the Duffer Brothers were too sensitive to kill any of the beloved characters off.

“We need to have the mindset of Game of Thrones. Kill me off! They tried killing David [Harbour] off, and they brought him back,” she added.

In response to Brown’s statement, the Duffer Brothers defended their decision not to kill any of the main characters during an interview with the Happy Sad Confused podcast.

“What did Millie call us? She said we were ‘sensitive Sallies.’ She’s hilarious. Believe us, we’ve explored all options in the writing room,” Matt explained.

“Just as a complete hypothetical, if you kill Mike, it’s like… that’s depressing… we aren’t Game of Thrones. This is Hawkins, it’s not Westeros. The show becomes not Stranger Things anymore because you do have to treat it realistically, right?”

You can watch all four seasons of Stranger Things on Netflix.
