Terrence Higgins Trust marks 41 years since the death of Terry Higgins

Terrence Higgins Trust, the UK’s leading sexual health charity, is marking 41 years since the death of its namesake Terry Higgins. He passed away at the age of 37 on 4 July 1982 and is one of the first people known to have died from the AIDS virus in the UK. “His boyfriend Rupert buried him using his student loan to pay for the funeral,” the charity wrote on Instagram on the 41st anniversary of his passing. “At the time, HIV didn’t have a name, let alone a test. Rupert’s…

Government urged to expand opt-out HIV and hepatitis testing by leading charities

Funding the expansion of opt-out HIV and hepatitis testing in England is a “no brainer”, five leading charities have told the government. Terrence Higgins Trust, National AIDS Trust, the Elton John AIDS Foundation, Hepatitis C Trust and the British Liver Trust are all calling on Rishi Sunak’s administration to roll out the opt-out tests in A&E departments within areas that have a high HIV prevalence. In just 12 months, more than 1,998 people have been found with HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C as a result of opt-out testing in…

Mpox: Government urged to extend vaccination programme after new cases found

Terrence Higgins Trust, the UK’s leading sexual health charity, is urging the government to extend its mpox vaccination programme after a new cluster of cases was identified. The interim epidemiological update published on 25 May stated 10 new cases of mpox, which was formerly known as monkeypox, have been diagnosed – all of which were in London. Half of these were in unvaccinated individuals, while two were in people who had only received one dose. Five of the cases were acquired in the UK, with four believed to have been…

Only 20% of people in the UK know about PrEP, poll finds

Despite PrEP’s effectiveness at preventing HIV, new research has revealed that just 20% of people know about it in the UK. The drug reduces the risk of getting the virus from sex by 99% when taken correctly, though the findings from YouGov’s new polling, which was conducted on behalf of Terrence Higgins Trust, shows that ignorance about it is still rife. In fact, only a quarter of the British public know that an HIV-positive person cannot pass on the virus when on effective treatment. In addition, a staggering 77% of…
