Texas Supreme Court rules judges can now refuse to perform same-sex marriages

In a major blow to LGBTQIA+ rights, Texas’ Supreme Court has ruled that judges can refuse to marry same-sex couples. On 24 October, the state’s highest court issued an order adopting comment to Canon 4 of the Texas Code of Judicial Conduct, which focuses on the “judge’s extra-judicial activities to minimise the risk of conflict with judicial obligations.” According to the newly implemented comment, effective immediately, judges who “publicly refrain from performing a wedding ceremony based upon sincerely held religious belief” will not be in violation of the state’s judicial…

“They’re calling it c***y”: Tessa Thompson and Nia DaCosta on Hedda’s sapphic chaos

Tessa Thompson and Nia DaCosta have opened up about embracing a little lesbian chaos in Hedda. Billed as a “provocative, modern reimagining” of Henrik Ibsen’s 1891 classic Hedda Gabler, Prime Video’s romantic drama follows its protagonist as she “finds herself torn between the lingering ache of a past love and the quiet suffocation of her present life.” “Over the course of one charged night, long-repressed desires and hidden tensions erupt, pulling her and everyone around her into a spiral of manipulation, passion, and betrayal,” the synopsis adds. In an interview…

“Get a real job”: AOC claps back at anti-trans commentator Riley Gaines in online exchange

United States Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (AOC) has delivered a master class in effortlessly shutting down hate. On 26 October, conservative figure and failed college swimmer Riley Gaines took to her X account to seemingly spew hateful propaganda about New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani, Bernie Sanders and AOC. “We’re being destroyed from within,” she wrote alongside a photo of the three liberal political figures at a rally.   Fortunately, AOC didn’t let the bizarre post get her down. In fact, she delivered a scathing response to the Gaines in a…

The Standard Brussels gets the stamp of approval from this evil femme

Every 30-something white lesbian you know is obsessed with Brussels. Discover what the hype is about, in the city’s best hotel.  WORDS BY MEGAN WALLACE I don’t know when it started. I don’t know when it will end. But white, millennial lesbians in East London really love Brussels. Antwerp: also Belgian, with lots of money, and a strong design sector.  How do I…

Most simply, Sorry, Baby is the story of how a post-grad student (just about) gets over being sexually assaulted by their thesis supervisor. It’s…

Ragdoll tells a compelling #MeToo tale based on real events – review

Katherine Moar’s new play, Ragdoll, is inspired by the trial of American heiress Patty Hearst. We weren’t familiar with her story, so, for context: she was kidnapped by far-left guerrilla group the Symbionese Liberation Army in 1974, who raped her while she was held captive. She was coerced into committing crimes on their behalf, and was arrested after CCTV footage emerged of her involvement in a bank robbery. Initially she was deemed guilty and went to prison, though her sentence was commuted by President Carter and then a pardon was…
