Annabelle Comes Home star Michael Cimino will lead the cast of Disney’s upcoming Love, Simon series.
The half-hour spin-off is set to be set in the same world as the original film, and will follow Victor (Cimino), a new student as Creekwood High School who like Simon Spier, is on a journey of self-discovery.
He will reportedly seek out Simon for advice on coming out and how to navigate the terrors of high school.
Nick Robinson – who played Simon in the critically-acclaimed dramedy – will produce and narrate the series. Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, producers and co-showrunners for This Is Us and writers of the original film, will executive produce.
Starring alongside Cimino will be Ugly Betty star Ana Ortiz as Isabel, Victor’s mother who is feeling the pressure after moving across the country. James Martinez (One Day at a Time) will play his “guy’s guy” father Armando.
Isabella Ferreira (OITNB) will portray Victor’s sister Pilar, Johnny Sequoyah (Believe) as his quick-witted friend Mia, Bebe Wood (The New Normal) as her social media-obsessed bff and George Sear (Into the Badlands) as Victor’s charming classmate.
The Bold and the Beautiful actor Anthony Turple will play Victor’s awkward neighbour Felix and Mason Gooding (Booksmart) steps into the role of Andrew, the stereotypical cocky jock archetype.
The series will begin production this month in Los Angeles and will premiere next year.
Love, Simon received universal acclaim when it was released last year, and was notable for being the first major Hollywood studio to focus on a gay teenage romance. It grossed $66 million at the worldwide box office.
It also starred Jennifer Garner, Josh Duhamel, Katherine Langford, Alexandra Shipp, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., Keiynan Lonsdale, Miles Heizxer, Logan Miller, Tony Hale, Talitha Bateman and Joey Pollari.
