Man attacked with hammer and pushed onto subway tracks by attacker yelling homophobic slurs

The victim was able to pull himself off of the tracks.

A 21-year-old man in New York City was the victim of a homophobic crime when a man came at him yelling homophobic slurs, and hit him with a hammer before pushing him onto the tracks.

The attacker was said to have yelled “fucking f*****” at the victim, before striking him in the armpit with the hammer. The victim was able to pull himself off of the tracks before the next train arrived, and the attacker fled the scene.

The attack happened at 1:10 am on Friday morning at the Tremont Avenue D stop in Mount Hope. After the attack, the victim was taken to the St. Barnabus Hospital, where he has been described as in a stable condition.

The victim told police who responded to the incident that he did not know the attacker. Police confirmed they were investigating the attack as “a possible bias crime.”

ABC7 reports that the attacker was “a black male in his 30s with braided hair, approximately 5-foot-10 and 150 pounds, wearing gray sweatpants and a black coat.”

In a statement, the Governor of New York, Andrew Cuomo, ordered the State Police Hate Crimes to assist the investigation, saying: “I am absolutely sickened by the vicious anti-LGBTQ assault on a Bronx subway platform early this morning.

“This horrific and ugly crime is repugnant to our values as New Yorkers, and we have zero tolerance for such vile acts of hate.

“I am directing the State Police Hate Crimes Task Force to assist the NYPD in its investigation into this brutal attack to ensure the coward responsible is brought to justice.

“While those fueled by hate try to spread fear and intolerance in our communities, New York will continue to be a beacon of hope and acceptance for all.

“When you attack one New Yorker, you attack all New Yorkers, and we want the LGBTQ community to know we will always have their backs.”

Police have appealed for anyone with information regarding the incident to call NYPD Crime Stoppers at (800) 577-TIPS.
