Batwoman star Ruby Rose talks about importance of ‘don’t ask don’t tell’ scene

The star was on a panel discussing the pilot for the show.

Ruby Rose has spoken out on the importance of Batwoman’s ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ scene, in which her character is kicked out of the military for a having a lesbian relationship.

The ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ policy was a military policy used between 1993 and 2011 in the United States. The policy forbade openly LGBTQ people from serving in the military, and from people within the military from discussing any LGBTQ relationships they have had.

Speaking about how important it was to represent this scene on-screen, at the Television Critics Association’s summer press tour, Rose said: “When I thought about all of the people that were separated from their partners or were kicked out of the military, who had done these amazing things and fought for the country and risked their lives and then, over something as simple as who they loved, were separated or booted out, I immediately just was, like, there’s a lot of weight on this scene.”

Rose added: “That’s in a lot of the comics. It was important to me that we did that in the right way because of the gravity of that, and I believe we did.”

She also spoke about the importance of the show, adding: “I feel like there’s a lot of pressure on kids and that’s why making this show is so important…We want young people to watch this and relate to the people they’re watching on the screen and hopefully be empowered by that.”

Sarah Schechter, also spoke of the importance of Batwoman’s lesbian identity, saying: “Representation is everything and diversity is our strength. We love this character and we love her sexuality and we love her beyond her sexuality.

“We’re really proud of being able to have an out lesbian woman front and center of these shows.”
